Beginning with the Youth Summit on June 16 at Rutgers
University, the National Hip-Hop Political Convention has set its sights
on Newark, NJ, for a four-day session from June 16 to June 19, 2004,
rolling full-force into the programs that are the achievement of over two
years of planning. Baye Adofo Wilson, National Co-Chair and Project
Leader of the Museum of African American Music, and Newark Deputy Mayor
Ras Baraka, Chair of the National Hip-Hop Political Convention for Newark,
states, "The organizational infrastructure of Hip-Hop culture is the basis
for creating excitement at the convention, identifying issues and
disseminating that information among members." Their view is that this
convention, a first, and unlike any other before it, will be a hybrid
cultural/political event that includes examination and discussion of
political issues as well as present the music and spoken word that are a
common bond for the multi-ethnic Hip-Hop Generation between the ages of 18
and 35.
