In 2000, Karl Rove launched an ambitious study to determine why George
Bush hadn't won the popular vote. The study concluded that Republicans had "underperformed in the last 72 hours of the last two elections," and that they were especially bad at the face-to-face get out the vote activities that the Democrats did well at. So Rove started something called the "72 Hour Task Force" -- a program focused on getting out every last volunteer on the ground in the final 72 hours before the election. It was a massive success. Republicans credit the 72 hour program with a number of Senate and House victories in 2002. And you can bet that next weekend every last conservative activist will be out pounding the pavement to turn out right-wing voters on Tuesday. We've got to get the progressive base out too, and we've developed a organized, strategic, and massive plan for the final four days to do exactly that. Together, we'll drive literally hundreds of thousands of Kerry supporters who weren't planning on voting to the polls. But the effort relies on having a lot of volunteers to talk to people about why they can't afford to sit this election out. Can you come join us in a swing state for the final 72 hours of this campaign, or the final weekend, or even just November 2nd? Sign up at: http://www.moveonpac.org/lnvb/travel/?id=4709-4549055-5lOu0c.ekrHgjJIPAVrbVg We already have 6000 volunteers traveling to battleground states during the last and most critical days of the campaign; we could use 6000 more. Working side by side with MoveOn members from all over will be fun and rewarding. Whoever works harder on the ground in these last few days will win the election. In 2000, New Mexico was won by a mere 366 votes. Who can forget the 537 vote margin in Florida? Battleground states are all polling within the margin of error -- it is very likely that the winner will prevail by a slim margin based on how hard progressives and right wingers, respectively, work. If you can travel to the decisive Buckeye State of Ohio, the sunny beaches of Miami, or any of the top ten contentious states, you can set our country's course. Fortunately, the momentum is on our side. The Orlando Sentinel, which has not endorsed a Democrat for President in 40 years, came out for John Kerry on Sunday. And so did the Washington Post. And the Seattle Times. And the Portland Oregonian, which endorsed Bush in 2000. Momentum wins political races. We have momentum, and it's time to drive this thing home. Can you put us over the top? http://www.moveonpac.org/lnvb/travel/?id=4709-4549055-5lOu0c.ekrHgjJIPAVrbVg The future of our country will be determined not by Bush or Kerry, but by your efforts on the ground. Thank you, for all you do. Sincerely, --Adam, Eli, Hannah, James, Laura, and the whole MoveOn PAC Team Monday, October 25th, 2004 |
